AI in Research Writing

Wrap-up

Intelligence, Not Speed

Key question: What will you stop doing, and what will you start doing, in your next paper?

The whole module in five sentences

  1. Integrity is a design decision, not a disclaimer you add at the end.
  2. AI is strongest where it reasons about material you supply, and weakest where it must remember facts.
  3. Ask for critique, structure and alternatives — not for content and citations.
  4. Write first. Let AI make your thinking visible, not replace it.
  5. Verify everything you sign your name to, because the accountability is only ever yours.

A paper written with AI in ten hours and no thinking is worth less than a paper written with AI in ten hours of thinking. Use the time AI gives you to raise the quality — not to lower the effort.

Self-check

1. A colleague asks ChatGPT for 10 references on her topic and pastes them into her draft. What is the main risk?

2. Which of these is the safest and highest-value use of AI in a literature review?

3. Your sample is smaller than planned. Which action is research misconduct?

4. Can a generative AI tool be listed as a co-author?

5. When should you write your own rough draft?
